The new schedule of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has finally been released. The tournament will now resume from May 17 after being postponed for a week. The decision was taken amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, which forced the Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala to be halted on May 8. The stadium was blacked out after fears of violation of Pakistan’s airspace near Chandigarh during the match, following which the BCCI decided to suspend the tournament on May 9, keeping in mind the safety of players and spectators.
However, after the ceasefire agreement between the two countries on May 10, the BCCI decided to resume the IPL in consultation with the government and security agencies. As per the new schedule, the tournament will resume from May 17 and the final match, which was earlier scheduled to be played on May 25, will now be held on June 3. With this change, the remaining 17 matches of the league will be played in six safe cities—Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
The BCCI has excluded Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Dharamsala from the schedule this time. Kolkata has been removed due to weather uncertainty (possibility of rain), while other cities have not been included due to security reasons. The playoff matches, which were earlier scheduled to be held in Hyderabad and Kolkata, will now be played at new venues between May 29 and June 3. Ahmedabad has been preferred for the final match, whose huge capacity and better security arrangements make it an ideal venue.
The organisers faced several challenges in creating this new schedule, including the availability of overseas players. Given the busy international cricket calendar, many players will have to return early for duty with their national teams. However, the BCCI has coordinated with all the parties to ensure that this season of IPL 2025 ends successfully without any further interruptions.
