Australian leg spinner (the king of spin), who played for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL from 2008 to 2011, is in news because his family soon receive a massive payout of ₹450 crore. Shane Warne had a stake of 3% in this RR franchise, as this team now acquired by Kal Somani in around ₹15,290 crore, the respective amount will be paid to his family!
It was year 2008, Shane Warne Retired from the cricket and BCCI was planning to launch IPL (Indian Premier League). So there were 8 teams, and among them one was Rajasthan Royals. RR bought Shane Warne and there he had to lead the team as captain. But in addition to the captaincy, the franchise also requested be the mentor of team, teach the skills to players, and coach them. So this was like 3 in 1 kind of scenario (Captain + Mentor + Coach) and here Warne put forward a unique condition. He insisted on including a clause in his contract stipulating that he would receive a 0.75% equity stake in the franchise each year for as long as he continues to play. So it was like a fix payment/salary + 0.75% equity stake for each season.
| Detail | 2008 Context | 2026 Result |
| Franchise Value | $67 Million | $1.63 Billion |
| Warne’s Stake | 0% | 3% (Sweat Equity) |
| Monetary Value | Nominal / Risky | ₹450 – ₹460 Crore |
Shane Warne played the IPL from 2008 to 2011 (total 4 seasons) and his accumulated equity stake of 0.75% reached a total of 3%. Till 2011 the franchise value was not big, but in 2026 it valued at $1.63 billion. Shane Warne also confirmed about this ownership in an interview with The Herald Sun. Now the team has been acquired by a US-based consortium led by Kal Somani in around approximately ₹15,290 crore. Because Shane Warne had stake of 3% in Rajastahn Royals team, his family will soon get ₹450 – ₹460 crore.
Shane Warne passed away on March 4, 2022, in Thailand following a heart attack—a monumental loss for the cricketing world. As shared by Live Mint, at that time in 2022 his net worth was estimated at approximately $20.7 million (roughly ₹170 crore). This implies that, through this single deal alone, his family stands to receive a sum nearly two and a half times greater than his entire known net worth.
Another catchy thing is that, Shane Warne played only the 4 seasons of IPL and managed to make such a big amount that big players like Rohit, Virat, and MS Dhoni not made in last 18 Seasons. If we sum up the salary of each of these players (18 Seasons) then you will find the total is around Rs 200 crore each and Shane Warne made 2.5x more than that (Rs 450 Crore).
Well, the deal is almost done, only official approval pending from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). As per sources like News18, Moneycontrol, The Hinustan Times… the entire process like Rajasthan Royals (RR) ownership transfer, money transfer to all stake holders and other necessary legal and administrative formalities will be done very soon after the conclusion of IPL 2026.
So Kal Somani is the new owner of Rajasthan Royals. And one big new update is that RCB also sold for USD 1.78 billion (around ₹16,660 crore) to consortium comprising Aditya Birla Group. This includes both the IPL (Men’s) and WPL (Women’s) teams and as per EspnCricinfo report… the shareholders made 37x return from this deal!
