watch fifa world cup in India from June 12 to 20 July live

When Does the FIFA World Cup 2026 Start in India? (IST Dates & Timings)

The craze for football world cup is everywhere as it is the number 1 sports event that people love to watch. This year, FIFA has organized the World Cup in North America, where 3 host nations Mexico, Canada, and USA will welcome 48 countries. These countries will play at 16 venues across 16 host cities.

Because all matches of FIFA World cup 2026 is scheduled as per the host nations timings, India viewers might feel uncomfortable.  The Indian timings are not favorable as there is time difference of 9:30 hours. India is ahead in time — so when it’s daytime there, it’s nighttime in India, and when it’s nighttime there, it’s daytime in India.

FIFA World cup 2026 will start on 11 June 2026, and when the opening match between Mexico and South Africa (Group A) is played, it will be June 12 in India. In short, as per Indian Standard Time the 2026 FIFA World Cup will start in India on 12 June, and viewers can watch Mexico vs South Africa (opening match) on TV live at 12:30 AM (mid-night).

So for Indian viewers, it will be 12 June when FIFA World cup 2026 begins.

This time FIFA has allowed 48 teams, and as I have reviewed the fixture list, there are total 104 matches. Out of 104, only 16-17 matches are in favorable times slots and these are – 9:30 PM IST, 10:30 PM IST 7:30 AM IST, and 9:30 AM IST.

  • Before Mid-Night (12:01AM): 9 Matches
  • Early Morning After 7 AM: 7 Matches
  • Total Matches: 16 Matches

The timings for watching the remaining 87 matches including SemiFinal 1, Semfinal 2, and Final are very inconvenient for Indian viewers. In India, these matches will begin at 12:30 AM IST, followed by other timings at 1:30 AM IST, 3:30 AM IST, 4:30 AM IST, and 6:30 AM IST.

According to the schedule analysis, here are the six different kick-off times Indian fans need to prepare for:

  • The Prime Time Slot (9:30 PM and 10:30 PM IST): As revealed in the fixtures list, matches like Argentina vs Austria and Portugal vs Uzbekistan have been slated for 10:30 PM IST. This is the “golden slot” for working professionals and the can watch such big matches.
  • The Midnight Oil (12:30 AM & 1:30 AM IST): This is where most of the big Group Stage matches live. Think Spain vs Brazil or England vs Croatia. You will need coffee .
  • The “Graveyard Shift” (3:30 AM, 4:30 AM, 5:30 AM & 6:30 AM IST): This is the tricky part. Many West Coast USA games drop at 4:30 AM or 6:30 AM IST.

So, Indian viewers can watch only 13-14% matches of Men’s 2026 FIFA WC comfortably. Being a working professional, this number is even less, as only 2 friendly slots are available – 9:30 PM IST and 10:30 PM IST. In these so called friendly view time slots… only 9-10 matches are scheduled.

This is the main reason no broadcaster in India is ready to buy the broadcasting rights of FIFA World Cup 2026. According to reports from Reuters and WION, there is a standoff. FIFA is asking for a massive fee (reportedly around ₹100 crore), but broadcasters like JioStar and Sony walked away because they think the odd timing (midnight/early morning) makes advertising revenue too low.

So who will broadcast 2026 FIFA World Cup in India? As per latest leaks, Prasar Bharat is the last option. Government can step in to buy the broadcasting rights and Indian viewers can watch Knockout Stage matches including SemiFinal 1, SemiFinal 2, and Final on DD Sports , DD National.

In case, no deal signed, FIFA will make it live on YouTube Premium, and there you can watch the FIFA World Cup live on your device from June 12, to July 20, 2026.

What is your take on this? Though FIFA World Cup timings is not best for India viewers, but tell me in the comments, will you still watch the matches? or only selected games? What do you think of these weird timing slots? Leave your feedback below and don’t forget to share with others.
