Virat Kohli play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy

Will Virat Kohli Play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy?

Virat Kohli has retired from Test and T20I cricket, leaving only the ODI format for him. The catch is that only 15-18 ODI matches are played in a year and as he needs more practice to give a top class performance in upcoming ODI World Cup 2027, domestic ODI cricket serves as the most suitable and reliable option for him. So the short answer is: YES, he might play; fans could see him in action from Delhi side during the 2026/2027 Vijay Hazare Trophy.

There is one important thing, do not expect Kohli to play every match in Vijay Hazare Trophy . If you are searching for a simple yes or no, you will not find one, because Kohli’s participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy has never been about cricket alone. It is about workload, BCCI rules, and timing. The BCCI rule is quite clear and simple:

  • If no such international series is scheduled or in short a player is not on national duty then he has to participate in the domestic leagues. This reveals whether or not a player is fit, and whether or not they are active.
  • Suppose a player has recovered from an injury; he will showcase his performance to determine whether or not he is fit for the national team. Following this, the selectors will decide whether he is ready to play.
  • Since the number of ODI matches is limited, if the management feels that the gap between two series is too long—potentially leading to a player becoming inactive—they employ this approach to keep the player active. And this applies to every player.

Let me take you back to the last season, because that tells you exactly how this works. Kohli returned to the Vijay Hazare Trophy after 15 years and played just two matches for Delhi. As per reports, the BCCI had asked centrally contracted players to feature in at least two domestic games. Kohli did exactly that. He smashed 131 off 101 balls against Andhra and followed it with 77 off 61 against Gujarat. Then he left the squad. That is the pattern.

Now look at what DDCA president Rohan Jaitley said. As mentioned in his statement to India Today, “This is his home association. There is no question of whether we are ready or not… Whenever he is available, and keeping his workload in mind, he will certainly play for the state again”. Notice the condition. Availability and workload. Not willingness.

Here is the practical problem for the 2026-27 season. The Vijay Hazare Trophy starts on December 14, 2026. India are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka from December 13 to 19. That is a direct clash. If Kohli is picked for that series, he cannot play the early Vijay Hazare Trophy games. It is that simple.

So what should fans actually expect? Based on his past behavior and the BCCI directive, expect him to play a small number of matches, probably two or three, and probably later in the tournament if Delhi qualifies for the knockouts. He is not going to grind through the entire group stage. He did not do it last time, and there is no evidence he will do it now.

The bigger picture matters too. Kohli has retired from T20Is and Tests. ODIs are his only international format, and the 2027 World Cup is the target. The Vijay Hazare Trophy is not a trophy he is chasing. It is match practice. Treat it that way, and his selections will make perfect sense.
